Setting up a discovered attack: capture

In this lesson you will learn to set up a discovered attack by capturing. After setting up a battery and finding an enemy piece to target, a discovered attack or check wins material.

What do you have to do?
Prepare a discovered attack by capturing. Then win material by performing a discovered attack or discovered check.

White has set up a battery with a rook on f4 and a pawn on e4. Directly advancing the e-pawn and thus attacking both rooks makes little sense because Black can then capture the rook on b1 or f4. White must therefore first take the rook on b4 (1.Rxb4) and thus place the king on the same row as the pawn on e4 and the rook on f4. Once that is done (1...Kxb4), white can win the rook due to the  discovered check 2.e5+.
